If you like to fish, you like to travel. If you like to travel, you will be spending time in airports, on planes and in cars. Here are my top fishing magazines to help you pass the time.
1. Field and Stream/Outdoor Life:
Sister magazines, they are America’s oldest outdoor magazines. From fishing to camping and hunting, they give you all the information that you need to know. This was probably your grandfather’s favorite fishing magazine as they were both founded in the 1800s!
2. Flylords Magazine
Since 2012, Flylords has been telling the stories of anglers and guides from around the farthest, wildest and coolest places in the world. Through film, photography, and journalism they’ve created content that captivates, inspires and educates. You can read about Key West Tarpon on one page, brown trout in New Zealand on another and then go to their social media to watch a video about Lefty Kreh’s legacy. They’re doing some awesome stuff.
3. The Drake
The fishing magazine of fishing magazines. Their tagline is, “for those who fish” – need I say more?
Taken from their website, “Drake Magazine is a grassroots journal for flyfishing enthusiasts. Drakemag.com is a supplement to Drake Magazine, a grassroots journal for flyfishing enthusiasts. It was founded in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in the summer of 1998 on the principle that too much contemporary outdoor writing gives away all the answers to people who never learned what the questions were.”
Something that they emphasize on their website, “The Drake Magazine is not an instructional publication – it is for your reading and viewing enjoyment. The drakemag.com website will include stories and photos from the magazine, but we recommend you buy the real thing.”
Far too often people are stealing spots, being toxic on social media, not respecting fish, and the list goes on. This is a safe space. This is our magazine. It is the magazine for those who fish.
Bonus: Salt Water Sportsman
Originally published in Boston, Massachusetts in 1939, they have expanded from the North East to write about numerous different topics. Now it is a Smörgåsbord of angling information. You can learn about fly fishing for bonefish in Key West, trolling for marlin in the Azores and fishing for stripers all in one issue. It’s worth a read.
