So by this point those New Year’s Resolutions to cut back drinking or get in shape or eat healthier or save money have probably gone down the drain. That being said, here are some resolutions for fishermen which you might actually be able to handle… you know, two months into 2021.
Care for your gear
Right now I will give you my next paycheck if you don’t have jigheads or flies that have rusted hooks from saltwater exposure. Talk about setting yourself up for failure. Make a point of washing all your gear (including hooks and lures) with freshwater after each use. Doing this will make things last longer and keep you from losing fish. You can take this a step further by oiling your reels as well.
Organize your tackle
I’ve seen far too many guys with boxes full of snipped leaders, bent and rusted hooks and tangled line, clean it up! Get all the crap out of your box and actually organize tackle into designated compartments free of waste. This will keep you from rummaging around in your box when it’s go time and also lets people know that you’re not a total slob.
Donate to charity
This is one of those New Year’s Resolutions that you can really feel good about. As a fisherman we have to take care of the ecosystems that we rely upon so heavily. The following are some charities that I think are terrific and that you should support:
Fish More
This is the easiest of them all. Just get out there and spend more time on the water with the people that matter most to you.
Until next time, Tight Lines!
