My favorite fly of them all: The Schminnow

Of all the flies in my box, there is certainly one that I would choose to use over almost anything else. This is because it is versatile and can be used in a myriad of situations – Norm Zeigler’s Crystal Schminnow.

It was first created by Norm Zeigler in 1995 in Sanibel Island, and has been catching fish ever since. I have used it to catch everything from bass and tarpon in ponds, then used it for snook on docklights. For this reason, it’s a fly that in my opinion every angler should have in their box.

All these fish, and many more for that matter, all ate schminnows. It was one of the first flies I ever owned and thus lent itself to a lot of firsts as I started learning about fly fishing. Not only that, but it was also one of the first flies that I learned how to tie as well.

In this video Jarek will demonstrate how to tie it.

I hope you enjoyed this video and so will consider adding this fly to your box. If you did enjoy this video, then stay tuned for more awesome fly and knot tying videos.

This is the original schminnow shown in this video, however, there are many color variations of this highly versatile fly. For example, in “Mayan Gold” many Mayan’s fell to this fly.

Finally, I just want to encourage you to try this tie and get out there and fish!

Until next time, Tight Lines.
